How to Propagate Houseplants: Start With What's in Front of You

There is an enormous amount of propagation advice out there, and a lot of it contradicts itself. Water or soil. Rooting hormone or nothing. Cut here, no, cut there. Most of it assumes you already know what a node is, which is a strange thing to assume of someone who is asking how to propagate a plant.

So this isn't an argument for one approach. It's a reference: how to propagate houseplants, sorted by what you've actually got in front of you rather than by technique. Find your plant, find the method, know what "working" looks like.

One thing worth saying before anything else, because it takes the pressure off: propagation is the lowest-risk thing you can do with a houseplant. If a cutting doesn't take, you've lost a cutting. The parent plant carries on. And as long as you cut in a sensible place (which is knowable, and which this page will show you), the parent usually responds to being trimmed by getting fuller, not by sulking.

You don't need to read this whole thing. Skip to the part that matches what's sitting in front of you.

Three Things That Decide Whether It Works

Before the methods, the conditions. These apply across every technique on this page, which is why they're up here instead of repeated five times below.

Warmth matters more than light. Roots form in response to temperature. A cutting in a warm room with modest light will root faster than one on a bright but chilly windowsill, which is counterintuitive if you're used to thinking of light as the answer to everything. Somewhere around room temperature or a little above, roughly 18–24°C, is where most tropicals get moving, and Purdue's extension horticulture team puts the useful range in the same place. In practical terms: if you're comfortable in the room in a t-shirt, your cutting is comfortable.

Light should be bright, and indirect. A cutting has no roots yet, which means it has no way to replace water it loses. Direct sun on a rootless cutting is asking it to do something it physically can't. Bright shade, a few feet back from a window, well out of any direct beam. Timing means active growth, not a date on the calendar. A plant that's currently pushing out new leaves has energy to spare, and it will put that energy into new roots. A plant that's sitting still doesn't, and won't. Look at the plant, not the month.

Start Here: What Are You Looking At?

This is the routing step. Find the row that describes the plant in front of you, then tap through to that method.

If your plant seems to fit two rows, it probably does, and either will work. Pothos can be cut or divided. A mature sansevieria can be divided or leaf-propagated. Pick whichever sounds less intimidating.

The Five Ways to Propagate Houseplants, One at a Time

Each of these follows the same shape: what it is, what it's for, where to cut, and what it looks like when it's working.

Stem/Tip Cuttings: Growing a New Plant From a Piece of Stem

What it is: you remove a piece of stem and grow a whole new plant from it.

What it's for: pothos, philodendron, monstera, scindapsus, hoya, tradescantia, rubber trees, and most things that vine, trail, or climb.

Where to cut: just below a node. A node is the slightly swollen bump where a leaf meets the stem, and often where a stubby aerial root is poking out. That bump is the part that matters. It contains the tissue capable of producing roots, and a cutting without one will sit in water indefinitely looking hopeful and doing nothing. Cut about a centimetre below it, so the node isn't right at the raw edge. Include at least one leaf above the node so the cutting can keep photosynthesizing.

If your plant makes aerial roots, you already have a head start: those roots are looking for something to grow into, and they'll convert to water or soil roots readily. (We went further into what those aerial roots are doing in Reading the Climb.)

What working looks like: in water, small white nubs at the node within two to three weeks, then visible roots. In soil, you won't see anything, so the test is a gentle tug: resistance means roots. Either way, a new leaf is the clearest all-clear signal there is.

Division: Splitting One Plant Into Several

What it is: separating one pot into two or more plants that already have their own roots.

What it's for: anything that grows in a clump rather than from a single stem. Sansevieria, ZZ plants, calathea, ferns, peace lilies, spider plants, and a surprising number of the "one plant" pots you bought, which were often three or four seedlings potted together at the nursery.

Where to cut: ideally you don't cut at all. Take the plant out of its pot, shake or rinse the soil off the roots so you can actually see what you're working with, and look for natural separations: distinct crowns, separate rhizomes, individual clusters. Then work them apart with your fingers. If two sections genuinely won't separate by hand, a clean cut through the rhizome is fine.

This is the method that looks the most alarming and is usually the least risky. Roots tear. That's normal, and it's not the same as damage that matters.

What working looks like: honestly, nothing dramatic. A well-divided plant sulks for a week or two and then carries on. If yours droops after division, that's a normal response to root disturbance, not a sign you did it wrong. Keep it out of direct sun while it settles.

Offsets and Pups: Separating the Babies

What it is: the plant has already made a baby. You're just deciding when to separate it.

What it's for: alocasia (which produces corms), aloe, haworthia, bromeliads, spider plant babies, and many cacti.

Where to cut: wait until the pup has some size to it, ideally a third of the parent's height, and check that it has roots of its own. A pup with roots can go straight into its own pot. A pup without roots is still relying on the parent for water and is better left attached a while longer. When you do separate, cut close to the parent with something clean, and let cut surfaces on succulents and cacti dry for a day or two before potting.

Alocasia are their own case, because they store energy in a corm rather than in the leaves. If you've dug up an alocasia and found small brown nodules in the soil, those are viable, and the alocasia guide walks through what to do with them.

What working looks like: an offset that's been separated with roots intact often doesn't skip a beat. New growth within a month is a good sign it's established.

Leaf Propagation: When a Single Leaf Is Enough

What it is: a single leaf grows an entirely new plant.

What it's for: a genuinely short list. Succulents (jade, echeveria, sedum), sansevieria, some begonias, and African violets. Most houseplants can't do this. A monstera leaf in water will stay green for months and never become anything, because there's no node attached, and no node means no new growth point.

Where to cut: for succulents, twist the whole leaf off cleanly at the stem so the base comes away intact. A torn leaf base usually won't root. Let it callous over for two or three days, then set it on top of dry-ish soil and mostly leave it alone. (Jade is the classic starting point for this, and the jade guide covers what the resulting plant will want long-term.) For sansevieria, cut a healthy leaf into sections a few inches long and keep track of which end was down, because they'll only root from the end that was originally closest to the base.

One important caveat: variegated sansevieria propagated from leaf sections will come back plain green. The variegation lives in a specific layer of tissue that leaf cuttings don't carry forward. If you want to keep the yellow edges, divide instead. This surprises a lot of people and it isn't something you did wrong.

What working looks like: patience. Tiny pink roots first, then a miniature plant at the base of the leaf, over the course of a month or more. The original leaf will eventually shrivel as the new plant consumes it, which is the process finishing, not failing.

Air Layering: Rooting Before You Cut

What it is: you root the stem while it's still attached to the parent, then cut once the roots exist. It's the method for when you don't want to gamble.

What it's for: the tall, bare, leggy plant. A rubber tree with two feet of naked trunk and a tuft at the top. A monstera that's become mostly stem. Anything woody enough that a plain cutting feels like a real risk.

Where to cut: you don't, not at first. Pick a spot on the stem where you'd like new roots, ideally just below a node or a leaf scar. Nick the outer layer of the stem lightly, wrap the spot in damp sphagnum moss, and wrap that in plastic to hold the moisture in. Then wait, keeping the moss damp. When you can see roots through the plastic, cut just below the root mass and pot it up.

The bonus is that the parent doesn't go to waste: a rubber tree cut back will branch from below the cut, which is usually how you fix legginess in the first place. (More on why rubber trees do this here.)

What working looks like: visible white roots filling the moss, usually over six to ten weeks. Slower than the other methods, and far more reliable on plants where a straight cutting is a coin flip.

When It Doesn't Work

Most failed cuttings come down to one of three things, and none of them are a verdict on you.

It was too cold. The single most common reason a cutting sits and does nothing for a month. Move it somewhere warmer and it often starts moving within days.

The cut was in the wrong place. No node, no roots. If a cutting has been in water for six weeks with clean, firm tissue and no sign of rooting, look at where you cut before you look at anything else.

The water went stale. Water propagation needs fresh water, changed every few days. Stale water goes low on oxygen, and roots need oxygen just as much as the roots in your pots do (which is the whole argument in Be the Worm). Cloudy water and a slimy stem base mean change it, trim back to firm tissue, and start again.

If it rotted, take two cuttings next time. Not because you're likely to fail again, but because two removes the pressure from any one of them, and propagation is much more enjoyable when nothing is riding on it.

Rooting hormone is optional. It speeds things up on woody stems and makes very little difference on soft ones like pothos or tradescantia. If you want it, it's cheap and sits on the shelf at most garden centres and hardware stores, Canadian Tire included. Plenty of people never use it.

Potting Up: The Step Everyone Skips

This is where more cuttings are lost than at any other stage, and almost nobody warns you about it.

Roots grown in water and roots grown in soil aren't built quite the same. Water roots tend to be finer, more brittle, and less branched, because they've never had to push through anything or hunt for moisture. Move a jar of long water roots straight into dense soil and a good number of them will fail, which reads as "my cutting died after I potted it" and feels like a mystery.

Two things make it easier. Pot up earlier than feels right, when roots are around an inch or two long rather than a tangled mass. And use something open and airy so the transition is gentle: our house blend is two textures of coco coir with perlite and worm castings, built for airflow, which is exactly what a young root system wants. Keep it more evenly moist than you would an established plant for the first couple of weeks while the roots adapt.

Skip the fertilizer at this stage. A rooting cutting is living on stored energy and has nothing to feed with yet, so fertilizer at this point is at best unused. Once it's established and pushing new leaves, a diluted kelp feed (Kelpy, at about quarter strength, from the refill station in the shop) is plenty. Seasonal Notes for Hamilton

Right now is the window. From roughly late May through early September, our indoor temperatures and light levels line up with what cuttings actually need, and things that take six weeks to root in March will do it in two or three now. If you've been meaning to propagate something, this is the stretch to do it in.

By October, as the light drops off and the radiators come on, everything slows down. Cuttings taken in November aren't doomed, but they'll sit for a long time, and dry heated air is hard on a plant with no roots to replace the moisture it's losing. If you're looking at a leggy pothos in December, the more forgiving move is to note it and wait. February light comes back sooner than you'd think, and a cutting taken then will overtake one taken in November anyway.

The exception is anything you're propagating out of necessity: a rescue from a plant that's failing, or a cutting off something you're about to lose. Take those whenever. A slow cutting in January beats no cutting at all.

One Last Thing

Our burro's tails came in this week, and if you've ever handled one you already know what happened. The leaves drop if you so much as look at them sideways, and by the time the box was unpacked there was a small pile of them in the bottom. Finley collected them and started a container on the windowsill. They'll root. Burro's tail leaves almost always do.

That's most of what propagation is. Not a project, just an ongoing habit of keeping the pieces instead of tossing them.
