You finally do the thing everyone tells you to do. Your plant's been sulking in a dim corner, so you move it somewhere brighter: a sunnier windowsill, maybe out onto the porch for the summer. This is supposed to be the fix. And then, within a few days, it looks worse. Pale, bleached-out patches. Spots that have gone crispy and tan. A leaf or two that suddenly looks scorched.
It feels like a betrayal, honestly. You gave it what it wanted and it punished you for it.
The good news is that nothing here is a mystery, and very little of it is permanent. What you're looking at is sunburn, and once you understand what's actually happening inside the leaf, it stops feeling like the plant is being contradictory and starts making complete sense.
What's Actually Going On
Here's the reframe that makes everything else click: most of the houseplants we love are understory plants.
In the wild, the classic foliage plants (pothos, philodendrons, monstera, calatheas, most ferns, aroids of nearly every kind) grow on the forest floor, beneath a dense canopy. The light that reaches them has already been filtered, dappled, and softened by layers of leaves overhead. Their leaves evolved for exactly that: thin, wide, and efficient at catching low, gentle light. That's their whole design brief.
So when you take a leaf built for filtered forest-floor light and hand it unfiltered midday sun, you haven't given it a treat. You've asked it to do a job it was never built for. The leaf's photosynthetic machinery gets flooded with more light energy than it can process, and past a certain point that excess energy starts damaging the tissue faster than the plant can repair it. The chlorophyll bleaches out, the cells die, and that's the pale, washed-out patch you're seeing.
It's worth getting clear on one thing, because it connects to how we talk about feeding plants generally: sunburn is not the plant getting "too much food." Plants don't eat light the way we eat a meal. They use it to run photosynthesis, and there's a ceiling on how much they can run at once. Beyond that ceiling, extra light isn't nourishment, it's damage. (Same logic as fertilizer, which we get into in its own post: it's a multivitamin, not a food. More is not more.)
And this is why "this plant just can't handle sun" is usually the wrong conclusion. It's rarely the sun itself. It's the jump: a sudden increase in intensity that the leaf hasn't had time to adjust to. Given a gradual ramp, most plants build up more tolerance than you'd expect. Thrown into the deep end, they scorch. It's a dose-and-timing problem far more than a this-plant-versus-that-plant problem.
Is It Actually Sunburn?
Before you rearrange your whole home, it's worth confirming that's what you're looking at, because a few different problems can wear similar-looking clothes. Treat these as signals to weigh, not verdicts:
- Bleached, pale, tan, or whitish patches, often on the side facing the window and usually on the most exposed upper or outer leaves. This is the signature of sunburn. The location is a big tell: light damage shows up where the light actually hits.
- Brown, crispy edges and tips, fairly evenly around the leaf. This is much more often about dry air, inconsistent watering, or mineral buildup than about light. Different problem, different fix.
- Dark brown or black patches that feel soft or mushy. This points toward overwatering, rot, or a fungal issue, which sits at the opposite end of the spectrum from sun damage.
- Older, lower leaves yellowing and dropping while everything else looks fine. This is very often just the plant shedding its oldest leaves, which is normal housekeeping, or a response to some other change. Not sunburn.
So the quick read: pale and bleached, on the sunny side, on the exposed leaves. That's your sunburn profile. If the pattern doesn't match, the light probably isn't the culprit, and it's worth looking elsewhere first.
The Usual Suspects to Blame for Houseplant Sunburn
A few situations account for most of the sunburn we see.
Direct sun through glass, especially south- and west-facing windows in the warmer months. South windows carry the most sustained light, because the sun tracks across the southern sky all day, so a south exposure gets the longest steady dose. West windows are a different kind of harsh, and it's worth understanding why, because it helps you spot trouble in your own home later. West sun arrives in the afternoon, which is the hottest part of the day. The house and the air have been warming since morning, so that direct light lands on top of heat that's already built up. The sun is also lower in the sky by then, so instead of coming from overhead it streams in almost sideways, reaching deeper into the room and hitting leaves straight-on for a long stretch. High intensity, accumulated heat, and a direct low angle, all at once. That's why an afternoon west window scorches plants a morning east window never would.
And the glass itself adds to it. Think back to using a magnifying glass to start a fire as a kid: sunlight carries real energy, and when you concentrate it, it burns. A flat window doesn't focus light into a point the way a lens does, but it does something related. It lets the full brightness through while trapping heat against the pane, so a leaf pressed up close to a sunny window is sitting in a little pocket of light and heat at once. Same reason a parked car bakes in summer. It's usually the leaves closest to the glass that show damage first.
The move outdoors. Taking a plant outside for the summer is the single most reliable way to sunburn it, because even a shady outdoor spot is often brighter than the brightest indoor window. That one gets its own section below.
Water sitting on the leaves, a smaller and more debated factor. You may have heard that water droplets act like tiny magnifying lenses and burn the leaf underneath. It gets repeated a lot, but the research is mixed. On smooth leaves the droplet tends to focus light below the leaf surface, so it's unlikely to be the culprit for most plants. It holds up more plausibly for fuzzy, hairy-leaved plants that hold droplets up above the surface. So it's not the main driver, and not worth losing sleep over.
Worth saying, though: a lot of plants genuinely benefit from having their leaves washed. Dust settles on foliage and quietly blocks the light the plant is working to use, so a rinse helps it photosynthesize. Just don't leave it dripping in strong sun. Grab a pair of microfiber gloves and gently wipe the leaves down afterward. You clear the dust, you skip the standing-droplet question entirely, and the leaf goes back to work clean.
Reading the Leaf: Thick or Thin
Here's a rule of thumb you can apply by touch, no chart required: leaf thickness is a reliable first read on how much light a plant will tolerate.
Thick, firm, water-storing leaves (sansevierias, ZZs, many succulents) come from bright, exposed, often hot and dry places in the wild. That thickness is an evolutionary adaptation to exactly those conditions: room to store water, and a tougher build that shrugs off strong sun. So it makes sense that these plants handle a jump in light so well, because handling harsh sun is what their leaves were shaped to do in the first place. Thin, soft leaves (ficus, philodendron, calathea) are your understory crowd, built to catch gentle filtered light, and that same thinness is what makes them scorch quickly.
It's a proxy, not an ironclad law. Thickness stands in for the deeper adaptations underneath, like water storage and cuticle and native habitat, so treat it as a first read rather than a guarantee. But it's a good one. Touch the leaf, and you've got a solid starting sense of how bold you can be with the light.
Taking Plants Outside for the Summer
Summer outdoors can be genuinely good for a lot of houseplants: better airflow, brighter light, a real growth push. But it's also the textbook version of the sudden-intensity jump, so it rewards a bit of patience.
Which plants, and where. This is where "variety matters" earns its keep, and that thickness test comes in handy. Thick-leaved, sun-tolerant plants take to it easily. Our sansevierias go outside every single year without drama. The thin-leaved understory plants are a different story: a ficus or a philodendron will only be happy outdoors if it's in almost full shade. In a sunny spot, it's simply too much for them. And "outside" for a tropical almost never means open sun anyway. It means bright shade: a covered porch, under a tree, the north side of the house, tucked behind something taller.
Harden it off, gradually, and in both directions. Borrow the language from outdoor gardening here, because it applies indoors too. Start a plant in full shade for several days, then increase the brightness in small steps over a week or two, watching the leaves for any pale patches as your signal to ease off. The move back inside matters just as much: bring plants in before the nights get cold, which for us in Hamilton means once nights start dipping toward roughly 10 to 12°C for most tropicals. Watering shifts too. Pots dry out much faster outdoors, because wind, sun, and heat all pull moisture out quickly, so the same plant that wanted water weekly indoors may want it far more often on the porch. Good reminder that watering responds to conditions, not the calendar: check the soil, and don't assume the old rhythm carries over.
Meet Margaret. Our umbrella tree goes outside every summer, tucked under the grapevines where she's shaded for most of the day. Almost every spring she drops a round of leaves during the transition, and every year, by mid-summer, she comes roaring back fuller than before. That leaf drop isn't her failing. It's her adjusting to the change, and the reason it pays off rather than cooks her is entirely down to placement: shade most of the day, never baking in the open. She's the whole idea in one plant. The right dose, given time, in the right spot.
If It's Already Happened
First, the reassuring part: sunburn looks alarming, but it's low-risk and very rarely fatal. Nothing here is permanent in the way it feels in the moment.
The one thing to be honest about is that damaged tissue won't heal. A bleached or scorched patch won't turn green again, because that part of the leaf is done. But the plant itself recovers, and it does it the way plants do everything: by growing new leaves, this time better adapted to the light they're in.
So your job is mostly to remove the stressor and let it work. Move the plant somewhere with gentler light, or add a sheer curtain to soften a hot window. As for the damaged leaves, you've got a choice, not an obligation. If a leaf is mostly still green, leave it. It's damaged but still photosynthesizing, still earning its keep. If it's fully crisped, or it simply bothers you to look at, trimming it off is completely fine. That's aesthetics and your preference, not triage.
One gentle thing to resist: the urge to "help it recover" by fertilizing. A stressed, recovering plant doesn't need feeding. Fertilizer is a multivitamin, not a food, and a burned plant's problem was never a lack of nutrients. What it needs is the right light and a little time. Give it those, and the new growth will come in looking exactly the way you hoped the whole time.
Seasonal Notes for Hamilton
The sneaky one here is spring. Our winters are genuinely low-light (our houseplant hibernation post digs into what that quiet season means for your plants), and one can sit happily in a south or west window from November through February without so much as flinching. Then the days lengthen, the sun climbs higher, and the intensity coming through that exact same pane climbs sharply through March, April, and May. Same spot, same plant, dramatically different sun. Every year, some plants that wintered comfortably in a bright window get caught out by the spring ramp-up, because nothing about their location changed. The sky did.
Our local geography adds a wrinkle worth knowing. If you're down in the lower city, morning light from the east tends to be exceptionally bright, because it comes across from the Niagara direction with very little in its way. Few barriers, wide open, a strong sunrise. It's honestly one of our favourite parts of opening the bakery early: catching that sunrise come straight down Barton Street before the day's properly started. West and south light, though, often has the escarpment breaking it up before it reaches you, taking the edge off some of that midday and afternoon intensity. So an east window in the lower city can be brighter than people expect, and a west or south one a touch gentler than the general rule suggests. Worth factoring in when you're deciding where a thin-leaved plant can sit.
It's worth a walk around the house in early spring to notice which windows have started throwing direct sun, and to nudge the thin-leaved plants back or behind a sheer before the intensity peaks. Then patio season runs from roughly late May or June through to when the nights cool off in September, which is your window for moving plants out and back with the hardening-off routine above.
