You water a plant, or just brush past it, and a little cloud lifts off the soil. Three or four tiny dark specks, drifting up and then settling back down like they own the place. Your stomach drops a bit. Infestation. The word arrives before you've even gotten a good look at them.
Take a breath, because here's the reframe: those gnats aren't a verdict on your plant. They're a readout on your topsoil. Of everything you'll deal with as a plant person, this is one of the most fixable, and the fix turns out to be something you already half-know how to do. No chemical warfare required, no throwing the plant out, no starting over. Just a small shift in a habit you already have.

What Fungus Gnats Actually Are (and Whether They're Harmful)
Fungus gnats are small, dark, mosquito-shaped flies, and they are famously bad at flying. They drift and bumble rather than zip. If you can swat one out of the air with a slow hand, that's your first clue you've got gnats and not something more determined.
Here's the part that matters: the adults you can see are the least of it. An adult fungus gnat lives about a week, doesn't bite, doesn't really feed, and spends its short life doing one thing: laying eggs in damp soil. A single female can lay a hundred or more. Those eggs hatch into tiny translucent larvae that live in the top inch or two of the pot, feeding on the fungi, algae, and fine organic matter that grow in consistently moist soil.
So the flyers annoying you at eye level are the symptom. The larvae you can't see are the actual population, and both of them need the exact same thing to survive: a soil surface that stays wet.
One quick sorting question, because people often solve the wrong problem: if the little flies are hanging around your fruit bowl, your sink, or your recycling, those are probably fruit flies, and this is a different conversation. Fungus gnats stay near soil. That's their whole world.
So are fungus gnats harmful? For an established, healthy houseplant, not in a way worth losing sleep over. They're a nuisance more than a threat. The larvae mostly graze on fungi and decaying matter, and while they'll nibble at fine roots, a grown plant shrugs it off. Where they can genuinely cause trouble is with seedlings, fresh cuttings, and very young or delicate root systems, where there isn't much root to spare. So if you're rooting propagations or babying a tray of seedlings, take them more seriously. For your mature monstera, they're mostly just irritating.
Why Fungus Gnats Live in the Top Inch of Your Soil
Everything about a fungus gnat's life is tied to moisture in the top layer of the pot. The eggs need it. The larvae need it to feed. The adults are drawn to it to lay the next round. Dry that top layer out, and you haven't fought anything: you've simply removed the habitat. There's nowhere to lay, nothing for the larvae to eat, no reason for the next generation to set up shop.
If that sounds familiar, it should. Fungus gnats are just that same lesson, made visible and given wings. They tend to show up when the top of the pot has been staying damp longer than the plant actually needs. In that sense they're weirdly useful. They're a floating, buzzing readout of a watering habit that's drifted a little wetter than it should be.
Which is genuinely good news, because it means you don't need to become a pest expert. You need to read your soil, which you were going to learn to do anyway.
How to Get Rid of Fungus Gnats: It's a Watering Habit
The short answer to getting rid of fungus gnats is almost anticlimactic: let the top inch or two of soil dry out between waterings, and keep it dry through a full life cycle. That's the whole strategy. Drying out that top layer is what actually breaks the cycle, because the larvae can't survive in dry soil, which is the same conclusion university horticulturists land on.
For most plants, checking with your finger before you water does the job. If the top knuckle's worth of soil is still damp, wait. When you do water, one option that helps a lot with gnats is to water from the bottom: set the pot in a tray of water for a bit and let it drink up through the drainage holes, so the roots stay hydrated while the surface stays drier. The larvae live up top; the roots live down below. Bottom-watering quietly separates the two.
How long "let it dry" takes depends entirely on your conditions, which is why there's no schedule to hand you. A pot in a bright, warm south window dries its top layer in a day or two. That same pot in a dim corner in February might stay damp for a week. How Long Do Fungus Gnats Last? Wait for One More Cycle
Here's the number people most want: a full fungus gnat generation, egg to adult, runs a few weeks at normal room temperature, roughly three to four, and faster when it's warm. That matters more than it sounds, because it's the reason gnats feel like they "come back."
You'll do the drying thing, the adults will thin out, and within a week or two you'll think you've won. Then a fresh batch appears and it feels like they never left. They did leave, mostly. But a pot in the thick of it holds every life stage at once: eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults, in overlapping generations. When you knock down the visible adults, the next wave is already coming up underneath, cued up in the soil where you can't see it.
So the adults thinning out isn't the finish line. It's halftime. Keep that top layer dry through one more full cycle, another three to four weeks past the point where you stop seeing flyers, and you starve out the batch that was already in the soil when you thought it was over.
The reassuring part: this waiting is completely passive. You're not doing treatments for a month. You're just not re-wetting the runway. The plant is fine, you're barely doing anything, and time does the rest. Which is the real headline here: this is a low-risk, fully reversible situation. Nothing is dying. You're changing a habit, not rescuing a patient, and if you overcorrect and let a plant get too dry, that's easily walked back too.
Does Rich Soil Cause Fungus Gnats? (And Why the Peat Bag Isn't the Escape Hatch)
Somewhere around now, a reasonable thought shows up: my potting mix has all this rich organic stuff in it, the coco coir and the worm castings. Isn't that exactly what the larvae are eating? Should I switch to something plainer?
It's a fair question, and the honest answer has two parts.
First, the honest part: no organic soil is gnat-proof. A rich, moisture-holding blend can absolutely host larvae if the top stays wet. Ours included. We're not going to pretend good soil is somehow immune, because it isn't, and the fix is the same regardless of what's in the pot.
Second, the part that changes the decision: reaching for a plain bag of peat-based mix at the hardware store doesn't buy you what you'd hope. Peat holds water longer and more stubbornly than coir does, so a peat-heavy pot tends to stay wet down in the middle even when it feels ready up top. Worse, when peat's surface dries it crusts over and goes water-repellent, so you get a dry-looking top over a soggy core: exactly the trick that fools the finger test and talks people into watering again too soon. More water, wetter core, happier larvae. On top of that, a fresh bag of mix is one of the classic ways gnats arrive in your home to begin with, riding along inside it: university horticulturists point to contaminated potting soil as a common entry route, and to consistently damp, organically rich media as prime egg-laying ground. A wet peat bag checks both boxes.
So switching soils isn't the move, because the goal was never to find a medium the gnats can't eat. That medium doesn't exist. The goal is a medium you can read, one that dries evenly and tells you the truth when you stick a finger in. Coir re-wets and dries predictably, which is precisely the property that keeps a simple finger check honest. The castings aren't the liability here. A wet top layer is, whatever it's made of.

The Best Ways to Get Rid of Fungus Gnats, in Order of What Helps
You don't need all of these. Think of it as a menu, roughly ordered from foundation to backup.
Drying and bottom-watering. The free one, and the one that actually ends it. Everything else on this list is support for this. If you only do one thing, do this.
Yellow sticky traps. These are your monitoring tool. Stuck flat on the soil surface or on a little stake, they catch adults and, more importantly, tell you which direction your population is heading. Fewer stuck each week means you're winning. Be clear-eyed about what they do, though: they catch adults, which means they thin the egg-layers, but they do nothing to the larvae already in the soil. They're a gauge and a helper, not the cure.
BTI (mosquito bits). This is the targeted larvae tool. BTI is a naturally occurring soil bacterium (the same one in the "mosquito dunks" and "mosquito bits" sold for standing water) that's harmless to your plants, pets, and you, but specifically knocks out fungus gnat larvae. You steep the granules in water and use it to water your plant, and it does its work in the top layer where the larvae are. It's widely available at garden centres and hardware stores. Because it targets one stage, you apply it a few times across a couple of weeks to catch successive hatches, which lines up neatly with that "wait one more cycle" timeline.
A dry top-dressing. Some people like to cap the soil with a half-inch of something fast-drying and inhospitable: coarse sand, fine gravel, or a product sold as a top-dressing. The idea is to give egg-laying females a bone-dry surface they don't want and to physically get between the adults and the moist soil below. It's a reasonable belt-and-suspenders move, especially on a plant you're tired of fussing over. Not essential, but it doesn't hurt.

Do the Home Remedies for Fungus Gnats Actually Work?
Search "fungus gnats" and you'll get a dozen home fixes with strong opinions attached. Most of them aren't nonsense. They just tend to be less reliable than the boring approach above, and it's worth knowing why before you commit a weekend to them.
Hydrogen peroxide soil drenches. A diluted peroxide-and-water drench does kill larvae on contact, and it's a real thing that works in the moment. The catch is that it only gets the larvae the liquid actually reaches, right then, and does nothing about the eggs that hatch tomorrow or the adults laying more tonight. It can help as a knockdown, but on its own it's a snapshot, not a solution. And a drench means you've just soaked the soil, which is the opposite of the drying you're trying to achieve. If you use it, treat it as one punch, not the whole fight.
Cinnamon on the soil. Cinnamon has genuine antifungal properties, and since larvae partly feed on soil fungi, the logic isn't crazy. In practice the effect is mild and inconsistent. It won't hurt anything and you may as well, but don't expect it to carry the load by itself.
Dish soap sprays. A drop of dish soap in water will kill adults it directly hits, the same way it works on other soft-bodied insects. But you're only getting the few flyers you manage to spray, while the population lives underground. It's a minor assist at best.
Apple cider vinegar traps. A little dish of vinegar with a drop of soap will drown some adults, and it's a fine way to catch a few and feel like you're doing something. Like sticky traps, it's monitoring and marginal reduction, not control. It never touches the larvae.
None of these are wrong, and if one of them is already in your cupboard, there's no harm in using it. Just know that they all share the same ceiling: they work on adults or on a single moment in the soil, and the population lives in the part they don't reach. The reason drying plus BTI is more predictable for most homes is simply that it targets the larvae over time, which is where the numbers actually live. That can absolutely work alongside a vinegar dish on the windowsill. It just shouldn't depend on it.
Getting Rid of Fungus Gnats: The Short Version
Fungus gnats feel like an emergency and are almost never one. On an established plant they're an annoyance, not a threat, and the thing they're really pointing at is a top layer of soil that's been staying wetter than it needs to. Let that layer dry, hold the line through one more life cycle, lean on BTI and traps if you want the backup, and they run out of runway.
You'll come out the other side reading your soil a little better than you did going in, which is worth more than the gnats cost you. That's the quiet trade here: a week or two of mild irritation in exchange for a sharper instinct about when your plants actually want water.
