You're a few years into a house, tidying a tired corner of a bed, and you tug at the mulch and feel it: a sheet of something underneath. Black, woven, stapled down by whoever gardened here before you. That's how most people meet landscape fabric. Not in a store aisle deciding to buy it, but on their knees in a bed they inherited, or on the say-so of a well-meaning relative who swears by it.
And most of us already have a quiet feeling about the stuff. Something's off. So this isn't a big dramatic exposé. It's a calm walk through what landscape fabric actually is, what it was built to do, and what it quietly does to the ground it's covering.
It was built for jobs that aren't your garden
Landscape fabric wasn't invented to sit under a living perennial bed. It was made for a handful of specific, sensible jobs.
It goes under hardscape: gravel paths, patios, stone features, where you want a stable base and nothing growing up through it ever. It goes on slopes for erosion control, holding soil in place while roots establish. And it earns its keep in commercial agriculture, laid between crop rows to knock back weeds for a single season of production.
Notice what all of those have in common. None of them is a bed you plan to keep planting into, feeding, and improving year after year. That gap, between what the fabric was designed for and where it usually ends up, is the whole story.
It's plastic
Worth saying plainly, because the name softens it. "Landscape fabric" sounds like burlap or something breathable and natural. It's plastic: woven or spun polypropylene or polyester. When you roll it out over a bed, you are laying a plastic sheet across living ground and asking the soil to carry on underneath.
What happens to it over time
This is the part the packaging skips over. Fabric doesn't hold up the way you'd hope, and it doesn't quit the way you'd want.
Weeds don't read the instructions. Organic matter, dust, and mulch break down into a thin layer of soil right on top of the fabric, and weeds happily root into that layer, above the barrier that was supposed to stop them. Meanwhile the fabric itself clogs, so water and air have a harder time getting down where they're needed. And any edge that catches sun goes brittle and starts shredding into plastic fragments.
Then there's removal, which is genuinely one of the worse jobs in the garden. A few years in, plant roots have grown through the weave and mulch has matted into it, so it comes up in stubborn, torn pieces rather than a clean roll. Future-you does not send thank-you notes for this one.
What landscape fabric does to your soil
Healthy soil runs on traffic. Air moves down, water moves down, organic matter works its way in, and worms and microbes move up and through it all. That constant two-way exchange is what keeps ground loose, alive, and workable.
A plastic sheet interrupts that exchange. Starved of air, water, and fresh organic matter, the soil life underneath thins out, and the ground begins to pack down. This is where it bites hardest for us: our heavy Hamilton clay is a challenge to work at the best of times, and a few years under fabric measurably deepens the compaction. The fabric that promised to save you effort ends up creating the exact dead, hard ground it was supposed to prevent.
This isn't just a backyard hunch
Agriculture has leaned on plastic mulch films for decades, and researchers tracking what happens as those films weather and break down keep landing on the same themes: fragments turning into microplastics in the soil, and measurable hits to soil structure and porosity. Different scale, same basic problem as the sheet in your bed. If you want to fall down that rabbit hole, this review is a solid starting point. So what do you use instead?
Short version, because each of these deserves its own post down the road.
Sheet mulching, which is cardboard laid over the bed and topped with mulch, smothers weeds just as well and then breaks down and feeds the soil instead of choking it. A good deep layer of cedar mulch on its own suppresses most weeds without any barrier at all. And the best long-term answer is plants: dense groundcover that occupies the space so weeds never get a foothold. I'll dig into each of these properly in future posts.
If you've already got it
No shame at all. Most people reading this inherited their fabric or installed it on advice that seemed sound at the time. The good news is that pulling it out is very doable. It's a bit of work up front, and your soil starts bouncing back within a season once it can breathe again.
